This calculator determines the required monthly payment to reduce a credit card balance to zero within a target number of months. It uses the standard amortization formula, assuming equal monthly payments and no new purchases on the card: Payment = P * [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1], where r is APR / 12.
1. Enter the outstanding Credit Card Balance. 2. Input the card's Annual Percentage Rate (APR). 3. Input the target payoff period in months. 4. Review the required fixed monthly payment, total interest cost, and total amount you will repay.
Target Monthly Payment is the fixed amount you must pay every month to meet your timeline. Total Interest Cost shows the cumulative interest fees paid, and Total Amount Repaid is the sum of the principal and interest.
FAQ
Minimum payments are usually set very low (e.g., 2% of the balance). If you only pay the minimum, most of the money goes toward interest, and it can take decades to clear the debt while costing you thousands extra in interest.
Yes. Adding new purchases to the card increases the balance and changes the required payoff payments, making it much harder to stick to your timeline and eliminate the debt.
